Herrin- Lois Jean Jacobs, 84, of Herrin, passed away at 7:30 PM, Wednesday, August 9, 2023 at her home.
Lois was born on June 24, 1939 in Royalton, IL to O.F. and Helen (Swetz) Griffith. She graduated from Royalton High School in 1957 and she attended SIU-VTI School of Business Machines and worked at Norge in Herrin for 9 months before being hired at Allen Industries.
She worked as a secretary at Allen Industries for 17 years. She quit when her first and only child, Wesley Eugene Stafko, was born in 1974. She was a former member of the Royalton First Baptist Church where she married her first husband Kenneth B. Stafko in 1959. After moving from Royalton to Herrin, she and Kenny joined Herrin First Baptist where she served as Girls Auxiliary Leader and helped with many other events through the years. After Kenneth passed away in 1988, she later married her husband of 32 years, Carrol “Smokey” Jacobs at Herrin First Baptist. He survives of Herrin.
She and her first husband were in a partnership with Jim and Jan Griffith in the Stafko-Griffith Phillips 66 Company in Herrin and then later with Dave and Patty Cox in the “Cookie Shop” in the Carbondale Mall. She was a very active lady and volunteered her time for many years in the Gift Shop of Herrin Hospital for the Herrin Hospital Auxiliary. She also worked at the surgery desk upstairs. She was a member of the Herrin Woman’s Club from 1989 to present, served as President of the Literature Department from 1995-1997 and from 2012-2013. She loved meeting and making new friends and was very proud of the Herrin Woman’s Club. One event stands out for her and that was helping organize and supervise the Luncheon for the Herrin Honor Guard at the First Baptist Church in Herrin. She worked hard for the club with the “Tour of Homes”, moving the Doughboy, supporting the civic center and the library, new fire engine and many more activities and fundraisers for the club, including the “Waffle Dinner” every year at Mary’s Restaurant, HerrinFesta Italiana and yard sales.
In her spare time, she enjoyed spending quality time with her beloved family and grandchildren, reading romance and political thrillers, playing cards and dominos and playing puzzles on the computer. She was a big Neil Diamond fan and she will be dearly missed by her family and friends.
She is survived by her beloved husband Carrol “Smokey” Jacobs of Herrin; son- Wesley E. Stafko of Herrin; grandchildren- Lila and Liam; Smokey’s two children- Rose (Terry Coyle) Jacobs of Bullhead City, AZ and Gene (Susan) Jacobs of St. Cloud, FL and grandchildren- Jennifer& Jarod and Chase and Drake and one great grandchild- Emmet.
