Herrin- Lindell Keith “Sparky” Coriasco, 83, of Toone, TN, formerly of Herrin, passed away at 2:41 PM, Friday, June 2, 2023 at Regional One Healthcare in Memphis, TN.
Lindell was born on December 11, 1939 in Clifford, IL to Felice and Ruth (Grasty) Coriasco. He married his true love Peggy Odom on July 9, 1959 in Carrier Mills, IL. They shared 64 wonderful years together. Peggy Survives of Toone, TN.
Lindell was a member of the First Methodist Church in Herrin until he moved to Toone where they attended Cloverport Baptist Church. He was a graduate of Herrin High School and then served his country proudly as a US Army Reservist with 6 months of active duty. Sparky eventually attended the University of Illinois where he became firefighter certified. In 1964 he was hired as a firefighter for the city of Herrin and remained in that capacity until 1976 when he was promoted to Captain, Public Education and Fire Prevention Officer and shift Commander. During this time (1970-1973) he also owned and operated a small grocery and produce store in Energy, IL. In 1978 he was promoted to Assistant Fire Chief and served in that position while also being appointed as the City of Herrin Building Codes Inspector in 1980. In 1982 he was appointed Herrin Fire Chief and served in the position until 1990 when he was then appointed as the Fire Chief for the Williamson County Fire Protection District. His new job was to form a new fire department from the ground up. He was responsible for building and equipping 6 fire stations and was responsible for the recruitment and training of personnel to man the stations. He oversaw budgeting and administrative duties along with public education and fire prevention as well as the day-to-day operations of 6 stations. He remained Chief of the Williamson County Fire Protection District from 1990 until 2000.
In addition to initiating the public education and fire prevention programs, he started the smoke detector sales program through the Herrin Fire Department, (one of the most successful programs in the country). He developed the City of Herrin Codes Enforcement programs including adoption of BOCA Codes and occupancy permit plans and smoke detector ordinances. He began the in-service inspection program by on-duty fire shifts for familiarization and detection of codes violations. He instituted mandatory personnel standards and training programs for the Herrin Fire Department. The department was the first in the region for Firefighter II training. He developed a film and tape library for use by schools and organizations as well as helping to organize the Williamson County Fire Protection Association and was on the organizational committee for the Williamson County Fire Protection District.
In his spare time, he enjoyed spending quality time with family and friends and collecting coins and stamps. He loved dogs, especially English Bulldogs.
Survivors include his beloved wife Peggy Coriasco of Toone, TN, children- Marla Lynn Coriasco and Jacque Deaton of Energy, Darla Sue Cislaghi and husband Jim of Toone, TN and Jack Coriasco and wife Thadra of Herrin; grandchildren- Brock Allen Cislaghi and wife Rachel Kelley Cislaghi of Indiana, Bradi (Cislaghi) Brockett and husband Travis of Jackson, TN, Colin, Keaton and Carson Coriasco of Herrin and Falyn Ladd of Herrin; great grandchildren- Colt and Avery Cislaghi of Indiana; nieces and nephews- Mike Murphy, Patricia (Murphy) Budde and David Murphy and wife Amy all of Olney, IL.
He was preceded in death by his parents, sister- Rosemary Murphy and niece- Myra Murphy Brown.
The funeral service will be held at 1:00 PM, Saturday, June 10, 2023 at Williamson County Fire Protection District Station #1/ 1505 East Main Street/ Marion, IL 62959. District Chaplain Rev. Robert Ray will officiate. Burial with Fire Service Honors will follow at Egyptian Memorial Gardens in Energy. Visitation will be from 10:00 am until time of service, Saturday, June 10, 2023 at the Williamson County Fire Protection District Station #1/ 1505 East Main Street/ Marion, IL 62959. Funeral Services have been entrusted to McCluskie-Miller Funeral Services in Herrin.
